An Alaska Family Resort Unlike Any Other
Planning a family trip to Alaska usually means juggling hotels, rental cars, tour operators, and restaurant stops across hundreds of miles — with kids in tow. Hatcher Pass Castle takes a different approach, combining Alaska lodging and adventures under one roof. Our all-inclusive Alaska vacation bundles lodging, meals, transportation, and guided excursions into one simple booking, so the only thing your family has to plan is what to pack.
Our castle sits off-grid in the Talkeetna Mountains, about 90 minutes north of Anchorage — but off-grid here means dark skies and mountain quiet, not roughing it. Families settle into rooms with private bathrooms, radiant heat, endless hot water, and Wi-Fi, with mountain and aurora-facing views right from the window. Kids get a real wilderness adventure; parents get a warm bed, a hot shower, and a cup of coffee with a view — no wonder so many parents who first stayed here on one of our Alaska vacations for couples come back with the whole family.

Summer Alaska Family Vacation Itinerary
Fully Customizable
Day 1. Talkeetna Mountain UTV
and Gold Panning Tour
Start your family vacation in Alaska with an off-road ride the kids will talk about for years. We’ll splash through creeks and mud on the way up into the Talkeetna Mountains, then stop for lunch with panoramic views. Every family member gets a gold pan and a lesson in Hatcher Pass mining history — searching for gold, turquoise, and quartz is a hands-on treasure hunt kids love. Visiting in August or September? We’ll stop to pick wild blueberries straight off the tundra.
Day 2. Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center & Portage Glacier
This is the day the kids see bears. After a scenic drive with a photo stop at Beluga Point, we’ll tour the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, home to wolves, grizzly bears, black bears, moose, and reindeer — guaranteed wildlife viewing, safely up close. After lunch, an experienced guide leads the family on the hike to Byron Glacier near Portage. At about 2 miles, it’s a genuinely family-friendly walk that ends at a glacier the kids can see up close, with mountains in every direction.
Day 3. Off-Road to Knik Glacier
Buckle up for a backcountry expedition across glacier rivers and black silt “beaches” on the way to Knik Glacier — over 25 miles long and 5 miles wide, one of the largest glaciers in Southcentral Alaska. No long hikes required: the whole family rides in, which makes this one of our most popular days for kids and grandparents alike.
Day 4. Freshwater Fishing
Willow Creek is famous for salmon, and there’s nothing like a kid’s face when the line goes tight. Our expert guide takes your family to a prime local spot to fish for salmon, trout, and pike — with patient coaching for first-time anglers. We’ll process, pack, and freeze your catch so you can serve your family’s Alaska salmon at home.
Day 5. Denali View Tundra Hiking
We’ll ride a UTV to the top of the mountain — so little legs skip the hard climb — and start the hike on a high ridge with Denali on the horizon. The family walks the ridgeline at your own pace, taking in some of Alaska’s most beautiful mountain scenery and watching for wildlife along the way.
Winter Alaska Family Vacation Itinerary
Fully Customizable
Day 1. Arrival
Day
We pick your family up in Anchorage — no winter driving with kids in an unfamiliar rental car. Stops along the way are welcome for snacks, supplies, or anything the family needs. Then it’s a warm welcome to the castle, where everyone can settle in, relax, and explore the property.
Night
Welcome Dinner: Hearty Alaskan cooking around the table.
Northern Lights Hunting 101: A fun, kid-friendly intro to the science of the aurora, how to read the forecast, and how to photograph the lights. Our dark-sky location and aurora-facing rooms mean that if the lights come out, your family won’t miss them — some guests have watched the aurora from their bed.
Day 2. Snow UTV tour with Denali View
The whole family rides warm in our heated, enclosed snow UTV as we climb through the forest to the top of the Talkeetna Mountains. On a clear day, you’ll take in panoramic views with a chance to spot Denali, the tallest peak in North America, from over 4,000 feet. We bring snowshoes along too — our guides love leading kids on their first-ever snowshoe walk along the ridge.
Day 3. Mountain Snowmobile Tour
Learn to snowmobile as a family! Our guide teaches everyone to operate our brand-new 2026 Polaris snowmobiles, starting with practice laps at the property until every rider — from cautious to confident — is comfortable. Then we head up the winter trail into the Talkeetna Mountains, with a possible distant view of Knik Glacier on a clear day. Teens and adults craving more? Our guide can take experienced riders off-trail for powder sledding, while others head back for cocoa and winter tubing.
Day 4. Glacier Hike
Walk on a real glacier. Our guided family hike on Matanuska Glacier is equal parts science class and adventure — kids slide through glacier tunnels, peek into blue ice caves, and learn how glaciers form while standing on top of one. It’s the kind of day that turns a family vacation into a story they’ll tell at school for months.
Day 5. Ice Fishing
A true only-in-Alaska experience: ride a snow UTV into the remote backcountry, drill through the ice, and fish surrounded by snow-covered wilderness. It’s calm, cozy, and surprisingly kid-friendly — and we’ll process, pack, and freeze whatever your family catches to take home.
Day 6. Departure
Day
One last hearty breakfast together before the family packs up.
Night
Scheduled transportation back to Anchorage, with optional souvenir stops so the kids can pick out a memento of their Alaskan adventure. We’ll have you at the Anchorage airport in time for your flight — tired, happy, and already planning the next trip.
Family Trips to Alaska Worth Remembering
Reviews & Experiences
Families come to Hatcher Pass Castle for the adventures and leave talking about the people. Because we host only a small number of guests at a time, our staff gets to know your kids’ names, your family’s pace, and what makes your crew light up — then builds the days around it. From gold pans and glacier hikes to hot cocoa after winter tubing, our all-inclusive family vacations are designed so parents can actually be on vacation too. Chasing the aurora together? Avery CaudillWe loved staying at Hatcher Pass Castle! It was so cozy, beautiful, and comfortable. Great accommodations, and especially wonderful to have somewhere close to stay after the late night northern lights ATV tour! Highly recommend!! This business is very accomodating and great to work with!
NinaHolderHatcher Pass Castle exceeded our expectations. Out of our 2 week visit to Alaska, Hatcher Pass Castle was our favorite! We wish we had stayed more nights here! It was very peaceful and so beautiful! The room was clean and comfortable and had a noise machine with bird noises on for relaxing.
Eski PoleOur stay at Hatcher Pass Castle was very peaceful and beautiful! Our room was extremely clean and comfortable, and we felt as if we had endless hot water, which we truly appreciated! We especially loved the water, soda, and personal care.
Rebecca WI absolutely loved my stay. I only wish I could have stayed longer! I ended at the Castle by providence. I was struggling to find a place to stay for the first night of a busy holiday weekend. I didn't want to drive 2 hours after getting off of a 6 hour flight.
Kristi LePoreWe absolutely loved our stay at the Hatcher Pass Castle—we didn't want to leave! The rooms are beautifully decorated, comfortable, and peaceful; you can even hear the soothing sound of the river across the road.
JJ MiltenbergerPlace was awesome! Off the beaten path really gave it the Alaskan feel! Off the grid added to the charm, but internet worked flawlessly. The sound of nearby river was really relaxing. Room was super cozy and check in was a breeze. Definitely would recommend to others.
Joni OltIf you need a break from the hustle of Wasilla/Anchorage this is a pretty great spot. VERY QUIET! Grab a chair on the balcony and enjoy the mountain views and listen to the river! A unique lodge where the rooms are warm and cozy.
Kathy NechanickyOf our 9 days in Alaska, Hatchers Pass Castle was by far one of our favorite locations! Great communication and thoughtful personal touches. Every staff member was personable. Based on their knowledge, we decided to drive Hatchers Pass.
Lori HackenbergMy husband and I came across Hatcher Pass Castle online. We were looking for a place to stay in the area and we were not disappointed. It was off grid but had all the amenities one might need including Wi-Fi. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating.

Dennis MeeksDid a snow mobile tour with Noah he made the whole experience amazing. Also stayed 2 nights. beautiful views and the room was amazing thank u ting and Dan for everything.
Prem MukherjeeThe rooms and hospitality here are great. Everything is new and in great condition. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the property didn't match the expectation set by the photos used to advertise it.
John CasertaLoved staying here. Wonderful area way out from everything. Beautiful views. The room was great, clean and comfy, little welcome bag waiting inside. My wife booked this room BEFORE we even knew they offered SxS offroad tours. So that was a huge bonus. 5/5 would recommend.
EECC TravelsWe had SO MUCH FUN on this tour!! Our guide Mike was awesome and he took us off-road riding through creeks, mud and rocks. Not to mention being in the most beautiful location imaginable!! I 100% recommend this tour to anyone visiting Alaska!!
